INFORM's Yard Optimizer determines storage locations that minimize container rehandles and reduce travel distances for retrieval. The system considers factors such as container dwell time, discharge and loading sequences, and physical yard constraints to assign slots. When volumes fluctuate or priorities change, the Yard Optimizer recalculates assignments to maintain yard efficiency. Planners remain in control: they see the logic behind each storage decision and can override recommendations when operational circumstances require it. Integrated with the TOS, the system applies to different yard layouts – from block stacks to automated storage areas. For terminal operators, this results in measurable reduction of rehandling, shorter retrieval times for truck and rail handovers, and better utilization of available yard capacity.
